@notes: This tab is based partly on the 
acoustic  version as recorded in October 1995 for BBC Radio 1. You 
can find it on the UK "Slang" CD single LEPCD15. There are also 
good acoustic versions on the "Video Archive" DVD and video, the 
"Acoustic in Singapore" bonus disc that came with some versions of 
the "Slang" album, and the "Unplugged and Unshaved" bootleg that was 
taken from MuchMusic TV. All the above versions are basically the 
same. The Radio 1 version was played with the guitars tuned down 
a half-step to Eb, but you can play it in standard tuning, of course.

Intro melody:
I would play this at the 15th fret on the fourth string but I've tabbed 
it lower for acoustic guitars which have restricted high fret access.
Those notes at the tenth fret on the D string are just pedal tones to 
keep the rhythm going. You should play them with palm muting. The main 
melody is on the B string.

Chordal backings: On the original there aren't really any chords in 
the verses, so for the acoustic version the rhythm guitar follows the 
bassline. Surprisingly, they tend to play powerchords (root, fifth, 
octave) rather than major or minor chords which are more typical for 
acoustic work. Although a D power chord is shown, Dm will work everywhere 
there is a D powerchord in the intro, verse, or solo.

The lead part of the intro comes in on the third bar (measure). If 
you are going to play the song like the Leps' acoustic version, you 
should leave out the first two bars. 

And so to the verse. Don't get too stressed out about playing the verse 
lead part 100% accurately because I think that there is some room for 
improvisation with this part. Also, like the intro melody, the notes on 
the D string are muted and not really that noticeable; the notes on the
G string are the ones you really hear.

at. It comes in the second half (last 8 bars) of each verse, and it sounds

Now the fun begins! OK, on the original electric version, there isn't really 
a rhythm part, just a lot of different guitars playing a lot of fills. If you 
think I'm going to write out all those, get bent! The most important ones 
(the distorted stabs in verse two) are Fmaj7 and F power chords. So instead 
here's a rhythm part based around the bassline.

On an electric guitar I would probably play this on the D and G strings 
but for acoustic guitars with less high-fret access, this works better.

Again, the original uses power chords but you can use major chords to 
fill out the sound. You could also play a double chord stab on the C# 
in time with that catchy drum fill, but maybe it sounds 
more effective if you just let the chord ring.

Those two notes on the A string that I put at the end of each bar 
(the 2-4, or B-C#) aren't in the guitar part; they're from the bassline 
but I like them so I play them.

Electric:

If you play the electric version, the other guitar should play lots 
of screaming harmonics and divebombs -- weird noises, basically. In 
the last bar, the lead guitar should play a series of unison bends 
on the G and B strings starting on the fifth fret of the B string and 
moving up very rapidly chromatically to the 14th fret. You can use the 
whammy bar as well for effect... that's the weird series of screams you 
hear running into the solo.

Solo:

Phil plays an extremely cool, very fast acoustic solo but there 
is no way I am going to figure that out unless someone gives me a 
very large bribe! So here is the electric version. The solo uses lots 
of string bends. Acoustic guitarists are probably better to slide up to 
the required pitch than try to bend their strings, unless they have 
strong fingers or light strings. For a Phil Collen feel, try to get that 
wide vibrato that builds into a scream just before the note dies. Also, 
try to slide off down the neck at the end of each phrase. Phil does that 
a lot. You can slide into the beginning of each phrase, too. These things 
add style.

As you can see and hear, it's a simple solo, so you just have to make 
it sound cool and melodic. For a rhythm guitar part, just play the first 
two bars of the intro rhythm part.
